Part of the Transmission and drivetrain guides.

Gearbox noise and grinding are rarely solved by replacing the gearset. These guides cover synchronizer rings, hubs and sleeves, crown wheel and pinion matching, gear ratio selection, and the manufacturing details that separate a quiet, durable gearbox from one that howls.

Synchronizers and shifting problems

Grinding gears are usually a synchronizer problem, not a gear problem. These guides cover ring design, clearance and wear patterns.

Frequently asked questions

Is it the synchronizer or the gear?

If the gear engages cleanly at low speed but grinds when shifting quickly, the synchronizer is the likely cause. If the gear is noisy in one ratio only, inspect that gear and its bearings. Teardown wear patterns confirm the diagnosis.

Does changing the final-drive ratio affect the speedometer?

Yes. The speedometer is calibrated to the original ratio and tyre size, so a ratio change requires recalibration to keep the reading accurate.
