Part of the Suspension and steering guides.

Wheel-end components sit between the suspension and the road, and their failure modes overlap: a bearing rumble, a CV click and a hub vibration can all sound like the same fault. These guides cover hub and bearing fitment including ABS encoders, CV axle and boot specification, and the adjacent hardware that is usually replaced at the same time.

Wheel bearings and hub assemblies

Hub and bearing units carry the wheel and often the ABS signal. Fitment and package contents decide whether the job is right first time.

CV axles, boots and joints

Boot failure is the beginning of CV joint failure; the boot material and clamp decide how long it lasts.

Frequently asked questions

How do I tell a wheel bearing from a CV joint?

A bearing rumble usually changes with speed and load direction and is constant in a straight line. A CV click is rhythmic and worse on full lock. Confirm by lifting the vehicle and checking for play and noise at each corner.

Does a wheel hub come with the ABS sensor?

Sometimes. Some units include the sensor and harness, others only the encoder ring. Check the package contents before quoting, because a missing sensor turns a one-hour job into a return.
