AC Compressors and Compressor Oil
Part of the Cooling and air conditioning guides.
The compressor is the most expensive part of an air conditioning system and the one most often replaced unnecessarily. These guides cover displacement and clutch selection, oil and seal compatibility, contamination and black death, and the sourcing checks that prevent repeat failures.
Compressor selection and fitment
Displacement, clutch and mounting differ by application, so confirm the complete assembly before ordering.

Frequently asked questions
Is a new AC compressor pre-filled with oil?
Not always. Some arrive with a charge of the correct oil, others dry. Read the label and add the specified oil and quantity for the system, not for the compressor alone.
What causes AC black death?
Compressor failure that sends debris through the system, usually after oil starvation or contamination. A replacement compressor without flushing the system will fail again.
