Knuckles, King Pins and Alignment
Part of the Suspension and steering guides.
Knuckles and king pins locate the wheel and carry the steering arm; alignment settings decide how the tyre meets the road. These guides cover knuckle and king pin service, camber, caster and toe, and the geometry faults that cause pull, wander and uneven wear.
Knuckles and king pins
The knuckle carries the hub and steering arm; king pins locate the stub axle on heavier vehicles.

Frequently asked questions
What does a steering knuckle do?
It carries the wheel hub, brake caliper and steering arm, and pivots on the strut or king pin. A bent knuckle changes camber and caster, which shows up as a pull or uneven tyre wear that alignment cannot correct.
Can alignment fix uneven tyre wear?
Only if the wear is caused by alignment. Worn bushings, ball joints or a bent knuckle will move the geometry under load, so the alignment will not hold until those parts are replaced.
