Part of the Brakes and friction guides.

Pedal effort and parking safety depend on assistance and actuation hardware that is often overlooked until it fails. These guides cover boosters, vacuum pumps on diesel and turbo engines, handbrake assemblies, pedals and the shift to electronic braking.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my brake pedal feel hard?

A hard pedal usually means lost vacuum assistance: a failed booster, a leaking hose or a faulty vacuum pump. Test vacuum at the booster before replacing the booster itself.

Do diesel and turbo cars need a separate vacuum pump?

Often yes, because manifold vacuum is limited on those engines. The pump supplies the booster and can also serve other vacuum-operated systems.
