Starting, Charging and Ignition Guides
Part of the Electrical, body and sealing guides.
The electrical system starts with the battery and ends at the spark or glow plug. These guides cover alternators, starters, charging faults, ignition components and the testing sequence that separates a flat battery from a failed alternator.

Frequently asked questions
How do I tell a battery fault from an alternator fault?
Measure battery voltage at rest and again with the engine running. A battery that drops under load with the charging voltage correct points to the battery; a low running voltage points to the alternator or its wiring.
Why does a starter click but not turn?
Usually insufficient current, a failing solenoid or a bad earth. Check voltage at the starter terminal under load before replacing the starter.
