Engine Ignition and Electrical Guides
Part of the Engine and engine management guides.
Ignition faults account for a large share of engine complaints, and most of them are specification faults rather than failed parts. These guides cover spark plug fitment, coil-on-plug diagnosis and the glow plug, solenoid and control valve hardware around them — with the identification steps that come before ordering.
Spark plugs: fitment and specification
Hex size, reach, heat range and resistor type all have to match. A plug that threads in is not automatically the right plug.

Ignition coils and misfire diagnosis
Coil-on-plug faults look like plug faults. These guides separate the two and cover what a coil part number actually proves.

Frequently asked questions
Can an ignition coil be diagnosed by swapping it between cylinders?
Yes, and it is one of the fastest checks available. If the misfire follows the coil, the coil is the problem. If it stays with the cylinder, look at the plug, the injector and compression. Record the result before ordering either part.
Why does an ignition coil part number matter so much?
Because a coil can fit the plug well and still be electrically wrong for the engine. Coil-on-plug fitment depends on the engine code, boot length and internal resistance, not just the model and year.
